Re: 1978 R100RS Engine Noise

Definitely NOT pinging. First step is to pinpoint the source of the noise. Remove the front engine cover and have a listen with a stethoscope to the beancan, alternator and timing chain casing area, PCV flapper valve area, valve covers, etc. to see if you can pinpoint the noise. No stethoscope? A lo...

brown for ground

Sounds like your having ‘bad ground’ issues. Not being there in person to evaluate the situation, here are a few things I would suggest you try to zero in on the cause of the problems you are experiencing. Keep in mind that (factory) ground wires on your bike are BROWN . Individually check that all ...

Re: 1970 R75/5 chassis wiring harness question

... the (male) connector tab on the solenoid this wire goes to is showing continuity to ground. This can't be correct, does this mean the solenoid is bad? That's the way the solenoid is made. Powering the male terminal on the solenoid with 12 volts will activate the solenoid (assuming that the hous...

Re: R75/6 LED turn signals. Dash light won’t flash

They (diodes) aren't rated in watts and you can't infer a wattage by multiplying amps by volts since the two ratings refer to different conditions. That's why I asked what specific diode you (Rob) would recommend for this application. The few times I've needed diodes for a project, I would simply e...

Re: R75/6 LED turn signals. Dash light won’t flash

Thank you both for the reply. Rob, i think you are right, the relay is for LEDs and has a 4 prong set up but the 4th prong is labeled “sense” which I thought was for the dash warning light but it appears to be a “bulb out” sensing feature. I haven't seen a conversion to LED turn signal bulbs that a...

Re: R75/6 LED turn signals. Dash light won’t flash

Do you want a cheap and easy fix to circumvent the problem? Power the dash indicator bulb directly from the flasher hot leads. You’ll need two 1W diodes so the left side doesn’t power the right side and vice-versa. This minor surgery can easily be done from inside the headlight. You can get the diod...

Re: Spark plug shorting method for carb sync with EME digital ignition system

On proper electronic ignition with coils of low primary resistance the joules stored in the coil will be at least 4 times greater than for points coils making the HT current at least 4 times higher on a dead short so there is much more potential to do damage. Hmmm..Your point seems a valid but.. Is...

Re: Spark plug shorting method for carb sync with EME digital ignition system

Answer to your question: If the HT wire is grounded, or connected to a grounded spark plug, you won’t harm the ignition.

For the record, the shorting method is not the best way to set up your carbs, but if it works for you, go for it.

Re: Odometer rolled over again

Almost 22,000km on the SpeedHut GPS speedometer since may. Smooth, steady and very accurate. The compass function is a real bonus. For some unknown reason it resets itself occasionally, this takes about five seconds, and then everything's fine again. There is no pattern to this occurrence and it is ...
