Probably because it's more fun than a dance with Matilda.Zombie Master wrote:Could you explain why anyone would want to tie his Kangaroo down? And why is that sporting?Holysmoke wrote:The drifting is good. Everyone has interesting life stories. The net brings many people together.

Who is Matilda? Heard songs about her, but don't know anything more.

Waltzing Matilda is a heavy duty political song about an impoverished swagman (tramp) during the 1890s depression in Australia. Matilda is his swag, or bedroll. In the song he steals a sheep, probably for food, possibly for company. He is caught by the wealthy landowner and police, decides he doesn't want to pay for his crime, and takes his own life by drowning. It's thought to be an allegory for a real incident in which a political activist torches a shearing shed during a shearer's strike and shoots himself rather than face the hangman's noose. The song is taught to Australian school children. That's why we are such good socialists. Hope that helps.jagarra wrote:Who is Matilda? Heard songs about her, but don't know anything more.

The bastards sure know how to write a pretty song (from someone that knows nothing real about music structure).
As always, Thanks Charlie! (email will be on it's way - I move slow)

Down came a jumbuck to drink at that billabong
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
And he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag
so how do you get "sheep" out of "jumbuck".......
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.
