Flasher Relay

Post by grant81rs »

Gidday Fellas,

Ok need and favour if possible!!

Regarding my new complete wiring loom install on my 78 RS and the flasher relay / indicator troubles, well today a parcel arrived from Germany with a few little goodies inside and what I thought was going to be a 4 pinned flasher relay, turned out to be a 3 pinned flasher relay,
With the new loom installed and connected, everything is working now but for the small green indicator warning lamp on the dash and yes the globe and connections inside are working fine and we have traced it back that the old flasher relay now must be faulty, so I am wondering if anyone in Oz has a spare one they want to sell, yes there are a little pricey at $150 from Munich Motorcycles to buy just for a testing purposes as I am really not 100% certain if this is the problem either?.

Let me know if you have any luck!!
Cheers, Grant

Got some relay numbers Grant? Look on the side of your four pin.

Na, I have three pin 49, 49a, c

I had some other smaller four pins but they must be under tank relays. Oh well.

Wonder what the 'c' is?

The 3-pin relay is for 9/80-on bikes including the R45 and R65, part no. 61 31 1 244 392. You need 61 31 1 358 194.

Grant,

I have had some success in repairing flashers by opening them up and resoldering all the points on the circuit board. Found that connections cracked and such from vibration.

Have those spring bits arrived yet?

Grant, before you go throwing dollars around ...

My old girl uses a cheap and cheerful 3 pin indicator relay. In the wiring diagram she is supposed to have a 4 pin, same as what yours is supposed to have. The 3 pins are labelled L, P and X. Here's a map of the layout (I have added the corresponding identifiers from the wiring diagram):

Image

The 4th pin shown in the diagram for your bike and mine is a connection to ground (31), and doesn't seem to be required with the 3 pin relay. I reckon it would be worth trying the above setup, assuming that the C corresponds to the KBL pin.

Gidday,

Thanks Charlie, will look into this if I can, but my 3 pinned plug has 49 49a 31

I just bit the bullet and ordered a new one from motobins for $70.00, I checked out the old four pinned relay that I have and all the soldier and connections looked solid etc. but again I am no expert.

I have been trying to get to the bottom of this issue for a good few weeks now and its starting to piss me off a tad :) so I bit the bullet and ordered the part.... Bugger!! but wait and see.

Ah well, at least $70 is better than $150. Best of luck with it.
