You have all the luck... a local electronics store with an old guy who knows what he's talking about... thing of dreams! Here in the UK, all of the old school electrconic stores were pushed out by the likes of Tandy and later, Maplin who promptly... well... faded away really. Went over to selling toys and novelties before going bust. The few times I've needed diodes for a project, I would simply explain exactly what I was trying to do to the old guy at my local electronics store and he would pull the seemingly correct ones out of the bins in short order. He must know what he's doing because everything has always worked as expected, and my bike hasn't caught fire (yet).
