Yamaha Xt600. This is my daily rider. Easy to work on. Grease fittings all over. Very torqey engine. I've been running this one for 15 years. And....you can ride logging roads and some off road. Been through hell and high water. Has no problem running heated hang grips and vest. Front and rear disc brakes. Electric start. Mechanical parts available. I enjoy this bike every time I ride it.

I should have mentioned I would stick to '80's or older. Hopefully still running but needing a good home.

I have always thought the Aermacchi was a cool looking bike. Finding one might be a problem and parts availability an issue.

A Bultaco Metralla is also nifty looking but it is very old 2-stroke technology. I f I went 2-stroke it would probably be a Yamaha RZ350.

A Yamaha SR500 would definitely be a good choice. I have seen them as racebikes, ratbikes, and restorations. Looks quite easy to make it into what you want. Kinda like a GoldStar with an electrical system.
Even better would be a Yamaha SRX600 but they are somewhat scarce.
Honda GB500? Nice but most are owned by anal people who polish them rather than ride, and think they are worth a fortune 'cause they are like new.

From the '60's a Ducati 250/350 single? Maybe, but they are getting pricey.

Also from the '60's - Honda twins like the 305 Superhawk and 450 Hellcat.

Like ZM's XT, all those XT,XR,XL,KLR,DR big single dp bikes are bullet proof. If I went that route it would probably be an older carbureted F650. Rotax engine, 19" front wheel, and a good seat.

I used to ride with a guy who had a 500 Gamma.
That bike was completely insane.

I had one of these. Great bike. First production Super Motard...before the classification even existed.

But not as bad as the Kawasaki H2 750 Mach IV, surely?

I had two H2's and an H1. Fun bikes but slow compared to my GSF1200S...very slow.
