Hopefully these photos will help
This is a pair of new Ferodo Platingnum brake pads, showing the taper.
This is a photo showing the shape of the ate pads
This one shows one of the old pads, but it has not worn evenly over the surface of the pad

Likewise, I can't explain my parallel pads.
Here's what Bob's Web site says:
DESCRIPTION
These EBC Organic Line NAO Series* replacement brake pads fit 1974-1980 models (R75/80/90/100) with FRONT DISC brakes and the stock "ATE" brand calipers.
The package includes both pads needed for ONE brake caliper.
Please NOTE: When installing any replacement pads on "ATE" calipers we recommend also replacing the BMW o-ring and retainer clip that go on the back side of one of the pads. Order one each:
- O-ring part # 34 11 1 233 120
- Retainer clip part # 34 11 1 232 513
*The EBC Kevlar® series has now been renamed NAO series, which stands for Non-Asbestos Organic. Here are the features:
• The NAO series are a superb all round value-for-money replacement for all levels of motorcycle and are still extremely popular with many riders who prefer the “feel” of organic pads.
• Fully TUV tested and KBA certified and conform to the new ECE R90 brake regulations which are about to storm the European market.
• Most EBC organic pads have expansion grooves which reduce noise and prevent cracking.
• The aramid fiber compound with non-ferrous particles helps to prevent surface scorching under load. In other words, these pads can prolong the life of your rotors!
In any case, I may have less than optimum pads for my needs. What are the best pads in terms of high friction coefficient (and good function when cold)?
Also, the parallel pads I put in no longer are parallel. So, at this point, maybe they're just fine (for the compound).
