I made my own alignment tool, mine needed a pin as the part that went into the end of the crank, not sure why but here is what worked.

I have made them using deep well sockets or what else I could find, biggest issue is to figure out how to get the center piece centered.

That'd be easy and cheap.

I have done just that, machined a tool from hardwood in a small 6" Craftsman metal lathe. It worked great.

I would use the densest least porous, finest grained hardwood you can find (such as a lot of 'tropical' hardwoods). Something like Oak would be a wood that I would not use, despite it being heavy. (But having said that, it would probably work.)

Wood will work OK, I have a few alignment tools that were made for autos that were originally made out of wood, they even have Ford or Chevy stamped on the side.

I was disappointed you had not buffed the tool. :)

Will there be poisonous snakes in that water?

No snakes seen but I almost walked face first into this critter and it's web. I stopped about 6 inches short of it!

Nah, that's a Garden Orb Weaving Spider you are torturing there. Quite benign if you don't go harassing them. They have very beautiful webs.

Here's the White Tail:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-tailed_spider

They've got a bad reputation for causing necrosis etc, largely unsupported by science. Their bite can be painful but is usually gone by the next day. Their aggressive behaviour ( I had one leap about a foot to bite me on the leg) marks them as viable targets in my house - they are the only spiders I kill rather than share with or relocate. If you are bitten by one get some Betadine antiseptic on it and watch for any change indicating infection. This advice is from the Poisons Info mob.
