The powdercoater should be able to sandblast your seat pan rust free for cheap, then paint it with a rattle can of your choice. It's not like it can be seen when mounted on your bike...

Yeah, I think I'm going to give it a gel strip this morning to see how clean I can get it, then if it isn't too disgusting anymore, and it fits in the oven, I'll bake it myself!

So, I did alternate layers of naval jelly and gel stripper today on the seat pan, and I got it down to where I should be able to smooth it out with a wire brush head on my drill.

I think it will be POR-15, then POR-15 chassis coat on top of that for the seat. If I get good results, I may just do the black frame bits as well, as they are pretty rusty and the product is reasonably priced.

The webpages by Brook Reams gave me enough confidence to go ahead and strip the bike.


Everything went pretty well, and I'm ultimately glad I took it down this far. The only buggery part that didn't want to come off is that pin on the clutch lever. I think this one will require a wee bit of propane.

I did also notice a fair amount of rusty garbage from the exhaust pipes that has migrated up around the exhaust valve on each cylinder. It looks like I will end up pulling the heads once the motor is back on the bike just to be extra sure that everything is clean and happy in there.

That pin should have a circlip on it, to stop it migrated upwards and breaking off the ears on the gearbox rear cover. Check for this before getting too physical. Make sure you replace with new, or use suitable sized bolt with nylock nut.

Yeah - it is normal for the circlip (e-clip?) to be disguised and dirty grease.

It will also disappear forever when you remove it...
