Drive shaft bolts tight!

Finally I got them off! It was difficult, I think because of the drive shaft spring and ramp shock absorber making it difficult lock up the assembly. I'm sure I would have tightened them to factory specs. But that was 25 years ago. Has anyone else had this problem? I ruined one BMW toolkit 12 point 10mm wrench. Not fun :x

Soon I will see the input shaft splines.

I can't remember how tight mine were from the factory, the first time I removed them on my R65, but over the years, I never did torque them to spec.

The method I used was to use the 10 x 12 box spanner from the tool kit, a boot on my foot, and a work glove on my hand.

I stomp on the brake with my foot, and loosen (with a cheater, if needed).

When I tightened, I would again lock the brake, and then push down the wrench only as hard as I could, with the gloved hand.

I never had one of these fasteners come loose on me. I also never had a bike that used the split-ring lock washers that reportedly caused some of the loose fasteners. Or I upgraded when I found them.

Thanx Rob! I do have another one from an old bike. I used a Par X 12 point wrench with a metal tube. What a bitch!

Damn! All that, and I forgot to add that my R65 did also have the cush drive in the drive shaft, but I don't ever remember it giving me any problems when tightening or loosening these guys.

If you want to use a torque wrench, here is the gizmo I used.

I just use my Craftsman wrench. How much I tighten them is more related to my pain tolerance than how hard I could torque them; if I used a thick rag I bet I could break one of those bolts. But I don't do that. My R65 has the cush drive too. I loosen them the same way Rob does. I may have learned the method from him, I don't remember!

The tool kt 12 point 10/12mm box end wrench can be used, as the 12mm end fits on hex socket. It's only 21ft/pds after calculating for the length of the wrench.

That can work, just don't want you to chew up another 12 point ring spanner.
