Help with Valeo starter:

On my 1984 R100RS, The Captain, the starter is kind of thrashy sounding. One thing that I think may be happening is that it may not be releasing from the flywheel as soon as it should. Is there something I can lube to help that? When I met him a few years ago, Major Softie suggested that I lube something but what is it?
This bike is used mostly for long trips so it doesn't get ridden regularly. Two trips ago, I noticed a glowing charge light that can only be seen at night. I haven't been able to find anything wrong but I've been assured that there is something wrong if it glows. I'm fixing to make a Rob Frankham wire harness and I'll post here if it makes the light go out.

He was probably refering to the starter
pinion (#20).

You lube sparingly the sliding bits,
not the teeth that engage the flywheel.

P.S.
I read somewhere that a shabby starter relay can also cause that symptom.

Thanks, Dougie. I read something in Snowbum's site that made me try a starter relay from a later bike. It didn't work. As a matter of fact, if anybody with a monoshock bike wants it, I'll send it to them. Anyway, I couldn't understand what he was saying to the degree that I knew what to do about it.

If the starter is original, it should be a Bosch.

I replaced it with a Valeo. I have them in my other two mid '80s bikes and the others work very well. I'll check to see if I have the old Bosch in the cupboard.
