Expensive, but with revenue gathering becoming more prevalent and outrageous, required!

I joined Duane's flock of sheep that go the speed limit. It is a new-found freedom not to have to worry about cops and their radar.

By spending a few bucks I can have the freedom not to worry about cops and their radar/lasers guns, and still enjoy the performance of a motorcycle. From what I gather, Duane doesn't ride anymore, and while I will not judge him for that; that would not happen to me unless there were health reasons. I lost a good friend a couple of years ago (Bob Harrison). We had a memorial ride for him last week. He rode to lunch the day before he died (82), and never bothered with speed limitations that were designed for the lowest common denominator on the road. Last time I rode with Bob he passed me on a logging road, like a mad man, and crashed. He was 80 years old then. We cobbled him back together and got on with the ride. I choose life.

Everything I've read and seen has indicated that radar/laser detectors are not effective. That is by the time the unit detects the radar/laser gun, the cop has you and it's too late. I've also read that most guns used are instant on and/or laser, which makes the detector even less useful.

You haven't read or seen my post. These detectors have laser jammers built in. They are totally undetectable. This is new stuff.

Laser/ Radar detectors have saved me many thousands of dollars, and much more in aggravation. But much more importantly, they may have saved my life, as I'm not confined to riding near autos and trucks because of a speed limitation. Space cushion is fundamental to riding safety. If you are going to ride around on a 1000 or cc's it would seem to me that operating at the ton would be a daily event. It certainly is for me. Why else would you require so much power. Also consider that 600cc bikes are cutting 10 second quarter miles these days.

So ZM, do you have a heads-up display in your helmet, as well?

I can't imagine trying to scrub off enough speed traveling 100mph to be legal and safe by the time I passed the cop.

I'll leave that fun to you.

It is my understanding that the radar can't nail your speed if you are in the process of deceleration at the time that the radar is put on you.

It is my understanding that you have been fooled by an "old wive's tale."

It is possible, that what you heard was true in the very early primitive generations of police radar, but it certainly hasn't been true for a long time. What is true is that a large vehicle can be picked up at greater range than a bike, so a bike gets more warning and may be able to slow down before being close enough for the radar to get a reading, especially with constant-on radar, but it's not the deceleration that's making the difference, it's the range.

I don't use a heads up display I use the Mark Parns visual alert which can't be missed. It just plugs into the earphone jack which powers the display. I just use some velcro onto a handlebar brake reservoir. Simple and effective.

As for as braking from a 100mph: on my Shitzuki GSF1200 it takes but a moment. Modern brakes are phenomenal. I do practice emergency braking quite often to keep sharp. But even my R100 with twin Brembos calipers, SS lines and aftermarket pads can do an acceptable job of scrubbing off speed. I find riding slowly, watching the scenery, to be the most dangerous riding. One is just not fully focused on the job when toodeling along. In 18 days of rapid riding through the Alps I never had a single close call. That F800r had fantastic brakes!
