R50/5 Carburetors

My original R50/60/75/5 BMW workshop manual shows a 'slide' Bing carburetor with a cable operated choke. And an accelerator pump. The Bings on my bike do not have a choke or accelerator pump. They have 'ticklers' to overfill the float bowls when starting.

So, was this a common practice to switch carburetors to a simpler kind? I know everyone says the 50/5 is under powered which I can attest to. But I wonder how much of a difference the accelerator pumps would make?

Any comments?

Accelerator pumps might help responsiveness but wouldn't change the maximum power.

The 28mm BIng CV's fitted to 35 HP R45's might be a good match for your engine. Only 24 cc difference between the 2 engines. Maybe even the 26mm Bing Cv's fitted to the 27 HP R45's would work.

I have no idea what kind of carbs that you have. We saw so few of the 500cc that I have no idea what was common. I only sold one in all my years as a dealer. Actually it wasn't so many years.

While living in Palo Alto I actually owned a R50/5 and rode it as my main bike for quite some time. I don't think that I ever took it on the freeway, or allowed a passenger.

It was quite reliable in every aspect that I remember. It didn't have the electric starter.

I may have a lead on a 75/6 engine. $5oo includes clutch and electrics but not carbs. Two questions:
How is that price?
Suggestions on shipping from New England to Ohio?

Other comments?

Replacing my clutch parts cost the better part of 500 bucks, as I recall. One of the cheaper things I ever had to do to my R65.

So how much does that engine weigh?
Hints about shipping?

An engine weights about 150 pounds. As for shipping, recommend that all 8 studs be removed and the cylinder opening be protected from the rods clanging into the edges of the block. The engine should be put into a sturdy cardboard box wrapped in towels, maybe using duct tape to hold them in place...use copious amounts of newspaper to fill the space in the inner box. Put that box inside another box with around 3 inches of clearance all the way around the inner box. Then stuff that dead space with wadded up newspaper, paper towels, maybe even old bath towels. You might want to consider making a small stand, something that is rigid (like a box made of 2x6s standing on edge) and will accept the two engine mount bolts and hold everything off of the bottom of the box.
