WOW! Lots of nice detail shots. Anybody know what the numbered dial on the Transmission is for? http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-Other-/2315 ... 1567567703 Image

I'm pretty sure it's not a 10 speed...

Looks like it only goes to four, with a neutral "0" between 1 and 2, so I'd go with gear indicator. Not for use by bi-focal-equipped riders approaching lines of stopped traffic, or by a newbies entering blind curves and contemplating proper gear selection . . .

Pretty sure neither scenario is ever supposed to happen on a Rennsport.

So, thanks for the lovely pictures, but for $117k, I think I'd want a Kompressor.

Which does lead one to wonder: Why would a Rennsport rider want/need a gear indicator?

Back in '54 races were dead engine start. Before pushing off it would be nice to know for sure you were in the correct gear.

That makes as much sense as anything.

Then you'd only need one number on the dial, say 2, if that was the gear you always push started the bike. If you needed 1st, then it's on one side of 2...if you needed 3rd, then it's on the other side of 2. Dunno...

Fun history--thanks, guys.

Maybe having all gears on the indicator worked for racer training like the graphing display on today's exercise machines---any girl-ly racer could push-start a Rennsport in 4th gear; you weren't ready for a main event at the Nurburgring or Isle of Man until you could bump it to life in 1st . . .
