I was looking at the parts fiche on back brakes at Max BMW and noticed there is a note under the spring that goes on the long rod saying that BMW got rid of it years ago and says not to use it!!! Whats up with that? Has anyone taken it off their /5 and /6 bikes?
Thanks
Kelly

The brake shoe springs are more than sufficient to keep the shoes from dragging. The only purpose that spring would serve that I can see is to keep the brake pedal from bouncing?

Kelly,

The spring served the purpose of holding the adjustment wing nut in proper position. It isn't needed as the brake springs on the shoes are capable of performing the same function.

If you want 100% originality, then use one, but it isn't needed. I removed mine from my '74 S many, many years ago.

Mine is still on, keeps the pedal from flopping and in the correct position, your foot can't work under the pedal. Most bikes that have a drum rear use them.
