I guys,

Well I've finally joined the club. I'd seen the ads for the R100RT's and RS when the first came out, problem was I couldn't afford them and the fact that I was 13 didn't help either.

Always liked the darned things so last year I started the search and finally found a one owner 1986 R80RT in good nick for a realistic price. The guys had never sold any of his BMW's. Here she is with he sisters.

Here's a close up.

For $2500 I couldn't realy past it up. Sure she's got 168,000k but...
Didn't like the side stickers, the highway foot pegs and the weird tailpipes so that's the first thing that went.

A year later we took her out for my first real ride of the season. With my brother and a buddy we left Ottawa for Cape Breton via the eastern US states.

Here I am with her on the Cabot trail.

Mindless to say she performed flawlessly, My brother freaked out that I took a 4000km ride on a 30 year old bike I had just bought but he knows nothing.

So ther it is .Iwill have questions but a quick search already told me that it's OK for my speedo to read 20k's over, that the bouncing needle means it's probably shoot and that I have the wrong rear tyre. I think Ill go for a Bridgestone Sptifire.

Cheers guys.

With proper maintenance, it can be a reliable as when new, or sometimes, even better.

Thanks guys,

One thing that I'd like to replace are the pipes. I know originals are rare to none existant, but what are the options?
These seem too short to me.

Well, for one thing, it looks like your mufflers are mounted upside down (wrong side) I think they should angle down. It may be they are aftermarket, and needed to be mounted that way to clear the bags? Image See what I mean?

Those are too short. Find something that is quiet. It makes a world of difference when touring.

Still, it is beautiful.

Bamboo, good catch. Pretty obvious for the picture you got. Weird though, if anything mounting them that way would give less clearance for the bags.

Duane, I agree they are too short and that bugs me but I'm too new to boxers to know what I can get a a replacement.
Any ideas?

Thanks again guys.

I think it's the muffler brackets on the back side of the mufflers that are mounted 90 out that are making the OE mufflers look weird.

Maybe swapping mufflers and flipping brackets will move them down.
