Yes epoxy. This is a nice idea which I might get around to one day. Presume you are thinking of using cylindrical neodymium or samarium cobalt magnets so you just need to drill a hole with the correct diameter. If it was possible to drill with enough precision they could be shrunk in by cooling the magnet and heating the plug. That's a tall order though in a blind hole. It's also possible to buy ring magnets which could be secured with a screw through the central hole.

I was thinking of taking the magnets out in the old rusty drain plugs I have but was worried what damage they could do if they got free and into the workings.

Just drill a hole and insert them. Now, try to pull it out. How in the world is it going to come out in actual operation?

You didn't tell us the model/year. If you have the /2, then the pan is metal and the magnet can be anywhere on the bottom. It won't move.

The sticking (or not-so-sticking) point is that OP wants to make his drain bolt(s) out of stainless . . . http://www.scientificamerican.com/artic ... s-work-on/

Yes, I was scratching my head on the "Why DIY?" question, but assumed the "making" was the sport of the proposed endeavor---justifying an otherwise under-utilized lathe, or something similar.

Another example of the fact that I can't read. Thanks for the correction.
