Why is mine different from Chris Harris

Post by Bigdownut »

Hello I am getting ready to lube the spline on my 1977 R80/7. I have been watching Chris Harris on YouTube doing it to a R100 not sure of the year. Anyway when he removes the swing arm spindle plastic cap there is a 27mm bolt head with a 6mm hex head pivot shalft in the middle. He removes both and tightens both again after and fills it with grease.
Why does mine look like this? and what kind of special tool do I need to remove the center? and how do I pump grease into it?

I don't know.

Perhaps someone produced a custom made bearing pin so they could use a pin wrench to hold it still while tightening the locknut.

You shouldn't have any trouble removing it once the lock nut is slackened off. As to greasing, it will depend if those holes have been drilled right through the pin.

It might take a pin wrench like this one on an old BMW tool (thanks for the picture, Duane)

That is for adjusting the preload on the bearing. It looks like it has the typical lock nut.

As far as lube, I guess the best you can do is overpack them as best as you can when putting them in. Surely someone here will have seen this, before.

Thanks Rob I wonder how do I torque the pivot shaft with a pin wrench?

That's a good point and problem even with the proper bearing pin. If you have the correct tool, after torquing the pin you can then hold it with the Allen key while doing the initial tightening of the lock nut but then you need to check it hasn't moved after doing the final torquing up of the lock nut with a socket and torque wrench. I don't know how anyone else does it but I just mark the position of the pin and judge it visually.

That pivot pin is for a pre 1970 BMW.
