Valeo Starter

Post by Gibson »

Hey anyone know if there is a Bosch starter that can work in place of Valeo unit? Late model 94' R100. My starter is sounding sick. It will crank the engine, and it is not a gear/clutch engagement thing. It actually sounds like something with the motor itself. I hate to replace with another Valeo if I can avoid it after reading the other Valeo thread...

The Valeo typically has one or two issues.

Planetary Gear Cover falling off and contacting the armature
Magnets glued to the housing fall off and contact the armature

New Valeo's don't have this issue (so I'm told).

In my case, both mine and my buddy's starters both experienced the planetary gear cover fiasco within the past 6 months. Valeo recommends purchasing a new cover but good luck getting it pressed into place as it's .095" larger in diameter. I reformed mine and added JB Weld (for plastics) to hold it securely.

If the armature is damaged, see Euromotoelectrics.com for spare parts.

FWIW,

Thank you much Jimmy!. It is sort of an intermittent scraping sound. Maybe I can call Euromoto and ask them if the new version they sell is the updated one. Bike has only 20k miles on it. Never had any problems with my 93 r100r, but maybe I just got lucky. I'll post result...thanks again!

I also have a 94 Mystic. My starter used to make a noise when the motor would catch which I assumed was a starter drive not disengaging with the ring gear. It did this for a number of years. Finally the starter died from they typical magnet problem. I bought a new Valeo starter with the updated design and haven't had a problem with it since.

Thanks Seth, I will just get the updated Valeo starter. I really regreted selling my r100r, but I guess it turned out ok though. I like the Mystic better, even though there has been a little problem or two with my bike. It always takes some time I guess to get a used machine into shape.
