71 R50/5 carb install

Post by jdvorchak »

Since I got this R50 pretty much in boxes I have a question about installing the carbs. I have the carbs mounted on the cylinders and the intake tubes ready to go on but I need to hook up the throttle cable. The cable is still attached to the throttle grip. I fed it through the screw on top no problem but getting that spring in there and aligning the knob at the end of the cable into it's locking location is proving to be a challenge. So before I have parts flying all over the place are there any tricks to this? First thought I had was to compress the throttle return spring with some tie wraps, get the cable into the slot and cut the tie wraps. Or am I missing something here?

These are Bing slide type carbs?

Similar to my R90s Dellorto's.

Try the following.
1. Make sure the cable extends all the way through the carb top
2. Install the spring over the extended cable
3. With one hand, compress the spring so that the cable extends past it
4. Install the throttle slide
5. let go!

That worked. Not easy with my fat old Italian fingers but finally got it. I ended up putting as much slack as I could in the cable and even pulled them loose at the top where they go into the throttle mechanism. Have to lube the cables anyway and clean up that throttle gear assembly.
