'71 R75/5 Fuse Recommendation

Post by Kriegmeister »

My bike has no fuses, or holders for fuses, or evidence that fuses were ever present. This is odd to me, and my gut tells me that I should install some. What are your thoughts? If it is general wisdom to run fuses on these bikes, how should I proceed? I'm tearing the bike right down to the frame at this point, so I can incorporate fuses into the harness as I rebuild. Please advise.

Regards,

Matt

The early /5 didn't have fuses. Later ones had two 8 amp fuses; one on the grey and one on the green wire coming from the ignition switch (according to Haynes)

I'd put 'em in. My old 75/5 had smoke coming from the headlight once....a bit of melted wiring, enough to need to replace the lot.

I think the /5 looms are still available.

I installed one 10 amp fuse on the small wire by the positive battery post.

I converted my fuses to this style, seems they are much readier available than the old German style . Most auto parts stores carry them, smallest fuse I could find was 8 amps.
