R60/6 - 1976 wont start.

Post by HenrikK »

Hi,

I need urgent help for my R60/6.

Bought the bike in poor condition - couldn't start aso.

Refurbished the cylinders/heads/valves. (equal compression - 10 bar on each)
Cleaned the carbs (Bing 53 - slide type)
New Boyer ignition and coil. Ignition set on "middle mark".
New spark plugs and wires. Sparks visual on both sparkplugs
Marked the flywheel before disassembly. When the flywheel is set on OT - Valves overlapping fine..

I can't make the bike start.. Any suggestions?

Is it possible to set the timing statically?

Thanks in advance..

A way to set the static timing is to pull the spark plugs and put them back in the wires and lay them across the engine fins, ensuring that the plug threads are touching the engine fins...use rope if you have to. Disconnect the battery, remove the front engine cover, then reattach the battery. Turn the ignition on and begin rotating the engine using the allen bolt for the alternator rotor. Watch the timing mark in the window on the left side of the bike. You should hear/see the spark plugs snap/crack when the S-mark is in the window If not, check your gap and timing.

Are the valves adjusted to spec?

Hi Kurt,

Thanks for answering.

I did make it start today. And adjusted the timing with my Strobe light - with high revs and the F mark in center.

So far so good.

But only when both idle-screws are turned all the way in - I can make it idle. And in addition. The exhaust smoke is black.

I've rechecked valve clearance this morning. re-cleaned both carbs to no avail.

Are the Bing 53 - slides - known to cause trouble? I have used similar Amal on a bunch of Britbikes with no issues...

Thanks again,
appreciate all the help I can get.

How is the float level? Could be too high.

Those are simple and good carbs. I suggest that you check to see if your idle gas jets are clogged up.
Ask the Indians what happens when you don't control immigration.

Also, screwing the mixture screws IN will make the mixture richer, opposite of most carbs.

Thanks,

I've cleaned both idle jets with a needle.

I've set the mixture to 1 1/2 turn out as suggested in the manual.

I have put on 2 Megaphone mufflers - will I need to re-jet?

Thanks.
