R1100S Front Crank Seal - what am i doing wrong

Post by Keatsie »

I managed to get a tidy R1100S but a few issues are starting to creep in, the most frustrating is the front crankshaft seal. The seal started leaking, so being a relatively simple (so i thought) job i ordered up a replacement seal.

Replaced the seal after preforming and using a seal guard in the shaft, replaced everything and left the bike overnight before starting and shes still leaks? Maybe slightly worse, so maybe i made a mistake and damaged the seal.

Attempt 2, preformed the seal again, taking considerable time to make sure its nicely formed. Thicker shielding on the shaft, just to make sure the seal is not damaging on anything. Put everything back, left for two days (rain) still leaks?

I have read all the various forum threads and I can’t see what i am doing wrong, any suggestions on what i may be doing wrong.

Sorry can't help specifically as my experience is with a 94 R1100GS. I did have a leak from under there and it proved to be from an upper cover bolt.

There's this...from an 1150 though. Some info re seals included.
