See! Not often I'm wrong but I was right that time.
This road shot is on what we call "The Three Sisters", which is made up of three Farm to Market roads that make sort of a triangle. The ride on them is about 100 miles distance. Location is about two hours west of San Antonio in the Texas hill country.
Funny how the road ahead just takes off for the sky. The roads meander up and down along the Llano Escarpment.
Some here will recognize this serpentine little jog on the east end of the Talimena Scenic Drive located a few miles from Ken's cabin and the U.S. Boxerworks Forum Rally....

You don't have to be very adventurous to do it for WAY less money than those packaged tours, although you do have to pack lighter since without such tours, you lose the baggage-van.
There are many small firms in Europe that rent late-model BMWs to tourists. There is one in Germany (whose name of course eludes me) who gets frequently mentioned in the BMW MOA forums because he's so good to work with from an American point of view.
So going it alone requires a little more thought and preparation, but it's certainly do-able. Even just bringing a handful of maps and improvising can yield a good time. On the other hand, a rigourously-planned itinerary can be great too, because you can pack in lots of high-points by efficiently designing your route around them.
