Sorry to hear about Sophie's stubborness. Any way. Here's an alternative to BMW's bean can. What little I read, people seem to be happy with it's performance.

There are two things that commonly go wrong with the later bean can ignition. One is the pick-up inside the bean can its self, and the other is the module up near the coils.

The stock system is very relaible and not expensive to repair or to carry spares for. Please don't give up on a nice old bike for the want of a couple of hours work and the price of a nice dinner out.

Sophie is to NOT going to be sold. Soon I will prepare her for hibernation. I will keep her and bring her back to life when I have more time and inclination to do so later on.

I am looking at buying a Suzuki 1200 Bandit.

I want a bike I can get get on and ride and not have to worry that she will come home on the back of a tilt tray.

Sophie has such a large list of what needs doing that she really does need to come of the road for a good rest and restore.

I could not find your first post when you started, so cannot offer much help at the moment.
I have surmised it is a post '81 R100RT but could be off base there. Comments about the bean-can led me to that conclusion.
Seems like we had a carburetor discussion a while back, tho.

Its a 94 R100LT with a 82 R80 Bottom end due to me pulling a non fixable cylinder stud in the 94 R100 original engine that came in the bike. She was not a basket case when I bought it. See http://rossmz.blogspot.com/2008/04/blac ... d-bmw.html

Ross, when I installed my Omega I had to move the pickup much closer than the specified distance to get it to work at all. I have it as close as possible without touching the rotating magnet. Worth a try.
