Gentlemen, My 77 R100RS (purchased 1978) is coming out of mothballs in Los Angeles and has needs. A lot of my carefully saved sites for parts are dead. Could someone bring me up to speed on where my parts will come from?
Also is there a recommended mechanic around me that knows what he's doing and will put up with me?
Instrument ring and grip/peg rubbers
Mufflers
Gaiters
Filters, etc.
Thanks.

Re: Parts/Service Resources Please
No knowledge of LA-area airhead mechanics. I often buy OE parts from online seller Bike Bandit. Good aftermarket filter and electrical system bits from Euro Moto Electric or Motorrad Electrik. And, uh, since you asked, most BMW parts come from Germany . . .

Here's a couple of links for independent BMW mechanics around the country:

People who really know their Airheads such that when you call them with your VIN, they'll know what part you need. That would be Tom Cutter (rubberchickenracinggarage), Ted Porter (the Beemershop), and Rusty at Max BMW.

I've spent most of my money on women, motorcycles, and beer.
The rest of it I just wasted.

Re: Parts/Service Resources Please
Thank you. I use realoem.com a lot for car parts but I see the site includes bikes. Does the existence of a BMW part number mean one of my existing car part suppliers can get bike parts? Or is it separate world?
Has anyone worked with Black Kat Motorwerks in Los Angeles? Might be the kind of place I'm looking for.
Don't get Por15 tank sealer on your hands. It won't come off.

I've never gone to the car place for bike parts. If you frequent a motorcycle parts supplier, you'll get better people and they might even cut you deals once in a while. If you aren't absolutely positive on the part numbers, the car place is going to look at you funny.
Black Kat is a name that comes up once in a while...I can't say as I've heard negative things about them.

Irv Seavers in Orange, Calif. is stellar. I travel one hour North to deal with them.

I had them rebuild an Ossa crank and bore some Honda cylinders about 40 yrs ago and they were good then.

Max BMW is excellent. They will talk you through the process if necessary. The only bummer is paying to ship and waiting for the parts to ship.
I can also get you BMW parts for similar prices, without shipping, but with the same wait time. I'm in Los Angeles / Culver City / Venice / Van Nuys.

Re: Parts/Service Resources Please
Got the old girl running with very little fuss (resealed tank, charged battery) and discovered instruments a re coming unglued internally. Clock is dead, odometer is running hundreds of miles instead of miles and speedo has erratic needle. I have had many previous experience$ with North Hollywood Speedometer, but currently I see a replica R100 speedo from India on eBay for $49 (probably the Enfield guys.) What is the current wisdom on getting instruments back in service?
