No matter what it was built as, it looks wonderful.

Yes that is a great looking bike. A fella over here, Pete (who is actually right now riding his R80GS through China) has one in the same colour scheme, it is original and I think its a 1979 model, a special that BMW brought out then.
Note the badges on the side of your engine are R100/7, same model as my bike. So it is likely to be a 1977 R100/7 tastefully done up as an RS in a 'Rennesport' (i think) scheme from about 1979. The dellortos are a nice additional modification as well.
I would be happy with that bike.
Cheers
Mal

Thanks for the replies fellas. I agree with you Mal on it being a 77 R100/7 with 79 rs gear, the tank paint and pin striping is faultless so i guess that is from the factory. I have been looking though the receipts for parts that came with and noticed new 38m exhaust so it for sure doesnt have 40mm exhaust.
After looking through the receipts the bloke i bought it off, has spent a lot of money giving it an overhaul to keep it a good reliable ride. Electronic ignition, all new wheel bearing's, fork springs, rear shocks, gearbox, clutch, delortos and more.
I noticed on the the barrels they have numbers on the fins near the head and down at the bottom of the barrell. on the fins on the left it is 0903-4-1182 and down the bottom of the barrel there is a 1 on one side and a B on the other with 31 over 10 in a square. Its the same on the right barrell except for 0903-1-1182 on the fin. So i am thinking they must be the same both side, just the left is more worn???
The bloke i bought it off did mention, that if he was to keep it he was going to add a bigbore kit to freshen it up.
It starts really easy and seems to me to run very smooth, just a bit of smoke from the left side ( I do keep it on the centre stand to avoid the oil running into the left). After the summer maybe i go for the bigbore kit and have the head done so it runs on unleaded. Any thoughts on that?
Some question regarding tryes and handling. It suppose to have progressive rate fork springs, but i find it dives quite a bit under braking and wallows quite a bit in bumpy corners ( which are the only corners in norway bumpy). So any money i would like to spend 1st would be suspension. Any ideas there, external fork preload adjusters, fork brace, better quality rear shocks??
When 1st buying this bike i was intending to turn it into some type of scrambler, but now i couldn't bring myself to doing it i like it just the way it is ( maybe see what it looks like with the lower part of fairing off). But would just like to have it handling a bit better with a bit more punch, where i live on the westcoast of norway its lots of small bumpy and twisty roads around the fjords and over the mountains. So i wont be doing much highway cruising.
Tyres: At the moment it has a worn ( needs replacing)metzeler lasertech front and metzeler perfect ME77 rear( maybe 77, but for sure say's perfect). The rear is worn a little flat in the middle, but still plenty of tread. Would you just change both front and rear to lazertechs? What about these conti classic attack tyres?
I greatly appreciate all the comments and info,
Bob

Not sure about the barrels, but I don't think they are L and R. The pistons are though. I will take a look at the numbers on mine later,( I am house painting today to restore my depleted 'brownie points' balance before spring)
Change your fork oil to 7wt oil before doing anything else. That should stop the front end pogo.
I have installed sonic springs and emulators (racetech goldvalves) in mine and very pleased with the results (after lots of f#@'in about with settings). They are only a couple of hundred dollars but you have to modify damper rods and not everyone that tries them gets the result they were after. A well set-up stock front end can still be pretty good.
Lasertech is a very good tyre and the ME perfect is OK too (just replaced mine with a Michelin which is way better). I have a Conti Classic attack on the front and Michelin Pilot Activ on the back and love the combination. The Conti makes a really big difference to the way the bike feels. It's like the change when you put a new set of tyres on, except magnified. Great stability and seems to be wearing slowly. They are twice the price here though, so that's why I chose a Pilot for the rear. They get rave reviews from everyone that uses them and they are a bargain.

A simple and quick test is for fork stiction. Fork dive is natural and BMW has a lot for that era. Be very careful what you change on the bike. It is very common to make one change and have a negative result, when actually, you made one or more accidental changes that caused the negative result.
Back in the day, it was common for people to want to "improve" something. They bought a bunch of the San Jose handling stuff and put it on. In the process of installing it, they messed up more stuff. So, they ran around complaining about the SJ stuff. Not that we liked the SJ handling stuff. Other riders would just tell them to take it to Marin, as they knew what they were doing with handling.
Then when it came to us, we often found that the SJ stuff wasn't the cause of the compliant, it was the owner's installation of the items.
Very few riders were good enough to need better handling. It was just a crazy fad. Mostly they wanted to be able to say to BMW friends, "I just installed the San Jose handling kit" Whoop-dee-doo.

Thats just typical, just the sort of damnable stupidity they had back in the day. Now we have forums everybody knows better.
