Hi
I've bought my first airhead that has 78k miles whose orig owner passed away over 20 years ago. The bike hasn't been touched since. After I get a home here in Ca I'm going to get it shipped from NC. looking for input on good steps to get her back on line
Thanks,
Ron

Congrats on your new find. Hopefully it was stored out of the weather. Keep us updated when you get the bike and start to roll up your sleeves.

Unless you know that the pistons can move, I'd assume/treat the bike as if they are seized.

Welcome.
We'll look forward to seeing it. Any pictures for us? Wires or mags, colour, stock or modded etc?
At first guess...all fluids will need changing, new tyres and go over the electrical connections and clean them up.

You have a large job ahead of you. I suggest spending many hours reading up on the /5, /6 and /7 models. Nearly everything that you could want to know is already written on one website, or another. Google is your best new friend. As a search phrase, keep in mind that there is a strong rumor that BMW made cars. Of course it isn't true, but just in case, enter "bmw motorcycle" and the issue as your search phrase.
Keep in favorites any site that looks like you might possibly need.
Feel free to ask here before you do much of anything to it. Don't assume that the procedures that you have used on your many bikes that you have owned in the past will work on a BMW. Often "well known" tricks will damage your bike.
We would prefer that you ask stupid questions first. There is no reason for you to make the same expensive mistakes that we made in the past. Make all new mistakes so that we can learn from you.
Get the parts book. The owner's manual can be useful.

...along with a manual, a good torque wrench is advisable. Always use new crush washers too.

Sorry, having trouble with Photobucket to show pics. Any recommendations on a good pic sharing website?

I use photobucket. Usually no problem. Are you copying and pasting the provided IMG link directly without adding this forums html Img bits. You don't need to as the pb link works directly.Holysmoke wrote:Sorry, having trouble with Photobucket to show pics. Any recommendations on a good pic sharing website?
