transmission interchangabilty

Will a /6 transmission work in a 87 R80 my R80 has a transmission leak and I have a couple of R90/6 transmissions I would like to change out while the R 80 tranny gets rebuilt

The clutch assembly is different. I'm not sure what else is different.

Don't hold me to this, but I believe the input splines also differ between the "ribbed-case" later /7 transmissions and the "smooth-case" /6 transmissions.

The short answer is no. I've heard of people swapping all the clutch components, including the clutch push rod, and still having issues. The /6 and /7 are interchangeable, it's after 1981 when the big changes occurred.
