oil flilter cover screw stripped

Post by Pattern14 »

Something I expected with the bike near to clocking over 900,000, but some advice would be greatly appreciated. The top 6mm screw on the oil filter cover on the front lower right side of the engine block has stripped and cannot be tightened up. The bottom two are fine, but oil leaks out under presssure ( engine running at highway speed) from the top. It is really awkward to get to, and i really dont want to pull the whole block out to fix one stripped thread. I did try a heli coil but the thread is totally shot and did not hold more than one fliter change.
I've never tried tapping out a thread to a larger size but it looks as though it may be the only way. The worse thing that could happen is that it leaks oil like a harley, but am really trying hard to avoid pulling out the mptor for one thread....

To only get 150-250 re-torques out of a set of aluminum threads is ridiculous---they just don't make them like they used to. ;)

Time-serts (solid inserts) have worked well for me, especially with center stand pivots.
The kits are somewhat pricy but I have never had one fail.

I haven't tried this but as a short term measure is it possible a longer screw would engage some undamaged threads.

While fixing the threads you might want to check why it leaked oil. The filter cover joint should not see the system oil pressure if the $2000 O ring is doing it's job. Maybe the cover will see crankcase pressure but when for example the cover gasket is not used they still don't normally leak oil.
