Windshield material?

Post by beemered »

Hello,Can someone tell me what plastic BMW used for the R100RS windshields.I ask because I wan't to polish it but want to avoid going through some sort of coating.I did this to a different Manufacturers windshield and it went right through this coating and it looked like blotched A$$ afterwards ; (
Anyone have a good outcome with polish?What did you use?
I know companies always say not to,but....

I don't know whether they're acrylic or polycarbonate, but I've used Meguiar's #10 plastic polish on my BMW OE and Clearview replacement windshields with good results.

The oem sticker that came on the oem R100RS screen says to treat it as you would plexiglass.

What state is your screen in? Is it old and severely yellowed or just needs the bugs and road grime removed?
I usually use a silicone based furniture polish called Mr.Sheen but I think the NA equivalent is called Pledge?

If it's got a heavy bug guts load, which tends to dry out and can scratch the screen, I usually spray H2O over the screen and cover with a wet towel for a few minutes. It softens the bug guts and grime and allows it to be easily and safely washed off with soapy water. Then I polish.

Plexiglass, Lucite = acrylic
Lexan = polycarbonate

An OE S-windscreen is acrylic (Plexiglass) that breaks into sharp pieces upon impact---as when my shoulder went through mine and got sliced up during Serious Crash #1. Might've had a different result with a polycarbonate screen--if such an device was available. If Steve's label is from an OE RS windscreen, it's also acrylic.
