I'm facing a dilemma. I did a spline lube and set the swing arm/final drive assembly aside in a manner that I thought would prevent leakage. However, when I came back to it, a large quantity of the final drive oil leaked out. I usually ride the bike for a short bit to warm everything up before changing the fluids. I would guess I lost about 33%-50% of the oil, but this is just a guess. The level check bolt is stuck like many, so removing it to check the level is not practical since I could cause a bigger trouble removing the bolt. So, what do people recommend
1. Ride it for the 10-15 min as is to warm it up before changing the fluid.
2. Drain and fill without riding
3. Add about 150 cc's, then take it for a warm up ride before changing the fluid.
4. Other??????
I'm leaning toward doing #3, but I thought I'd ask around first.

I'd drain them and fill with 10% less than the specified amount. With everything off the bike, you could fill the rear drive through the drain hole...

That sounds good with one slight problem. The bike's back together. But, thanks for the advice.Bamboo812 wrote: With everything off the bike, you could fill the rear drive through the drain hole...

Re: Need advice before changing final drive oil
Let it drain overnight, then refill with the specified amount. Riding it for a bit only raises the oil temp to get the oil to run out a bit faster, but I don't think it makes much difference on what comes out eventually. Any metallic bits/dust that are going to come out will be on the magnetized drain bolt regardless of the oil's momentary viscosity after a "warm-up" run.

Drain it and fill with a tad less than spec. 5-10% sounds good. It doesn't need to be exact.
