I'm a bonehead - I forgot turn signal switch!

Post by jjwithers »

I have been cobbling together a bike for a friend who got in a wreck.
It was a R90/6 -1975 .
I found a master cylinder and controls from a R65 to put on the clip ons (he wanted clip ons vs handlebars).
I installed everything and then realized that I can't wire up the turn signals because the right side controls of a R65 does not have the turn signal switch.
I was planning on using the left side controls from the /6.
I don't want an early '80's set of controls on the left because I don't want that goofy choke lever.

Questions:
Are there any left side switches, with the turn signal, that will fit on the /6 perch-handle?
Is there a complete left side (switches, perch, handle) with the turn signal switch but without the choke lever?

It is a custom build so I don't really care much about what is authentic.

The first two production years of the R65 had the clamshell-airbox-mounted-enrichener lever, so no goofy boss for the lever on those years. ('78, '79).

Also, there is a plastic blank that fits in that boss, if you go that route.

This page shows both the early year perch and the cap for the later years: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showpar ... Id=32_0742

And while the old part is NLA, there does not appear to be a unique part number for it! I sold my old original Type 248 parts book, so I can't look it up, but they should be available used.

I got to wondering when I looked at their cross reference for the part #. But it looks like there were /5s and pre-square airbox /7s that used them.
Part 32721240796 was found on the following vehicles:
R50/5-R90S 69-76   (07/1973 — 06/1976)
R45-R65LS..78-85   (01/1978 — 07/1985)
R 60, R 75 , R 80, /7, RT (76-85)   (05/1976 — 01/1985)
R 65 GS, R 80 G/S, R 80 ST (80-92)   (05/1980 — 11/1992)
R 65, R 65 RT, R 80, R 80 RT (85-95)   (03/1984 — 12/1995)
R 80 GS, R 100 GS, PD (87-90)   (12/1986 — 07/1990)
R 100, /7, /T, CS, RS, RT, S (76-84)   (03/1976 — 11/1984)
R 100 RS, R 100 RT (87-95)   (07/1986 — 12/1995)

Interesting. Thanks for the lead. Based on the diagram, and what I see on MAX BMW, I am thinking that the different switches would be interchangeable on either housing. And I am realizing that I can unscrew the R65 switches and try to mount them on a spare housing (if i can find one).

FWIW - My favorite set of controls/switches that BMW made are from the /5. They got bigger and uglier as time went on. But if the 80's switches work on a late 70's housing... then yeppie!

All I know is, my '79 (built in 11/78) had no boss on top.
I obtained a left side perch with the choke control when I built my conversion rig.
At some point the newer model ended up on my R65, and I used the later set-up on it for a while.
When I removed it in favor of the wires-on-the-carb, I bought one of the caps for it. It looked smart.

I really don't understand how the earlier /5 and /6 switches could use the same mount base, but I have never really held any of those switches in my hands.

Any /7 perch with a clam shell air box should do the trick.

Just an update... just in case anybody else cares - the early 80's sets of handlebar switches (up to '84) fit on the 75-79 handle housings.
