On an impulse I bought a set of used factory crash bars for my bike. They are the smaller 2 piece set. When I went to do a trial fit it seems that the bolt on the motor could be longer, as the nut did not spin on with a wonderful hold, about 1/3 of the threads.
So is there a longer lower engine bolt used to mount these with a good hold or what may be the options.
In checking the OEM fiche, they don't even show the mounting bolts so that option is not on the table.

Re: R90 crash bar mounting
Hucky sells a longer 315mm stud for that purpose. Listed under "chassis"
Max lists them under "frame" with the center stand parts, but doesn't offer the longer one.

Thanks, figured someone had gone down this path before.

Look at MAXBMW again. R90/6 under frame with the footpads they show a 327mm pin, pn#46 71 230 475.
Re: R90 crash bar mounting
Thanks Wookie. I ordered the longer one along with my new M/C seals from A&S. The extra 10mm on each side will give me plenty of room for a washer and a full hold on the nut.

I presume that you have read my article on this accessory. http://www.w6rec.com/duane/bmw/crashbars/index.htm

Re: R90 crash bar mounting
Duane, now you tell me.
I have un-weighted tires before not on a motorcycle but on a bicycle. Hit the crank while trying to pedal making a high speed turn, un-weighted the tires and rolled the tires off the rim when they caught, I crashed!
Maybe I will just keep them in the attic for now. I wanted to be able to add them quickly, these can be put on in a matter of a few minutes, they don't interfere with normal access.
thanks,
gg

Re: R90 crash bar mounting
Right on cue, ME 109 strikes again.
There are other types of crash bar that won't make you high side if the bar touches down when hunting sports bikes.
This didn't happen overnight. It took many years of effort. I took the bars off because they wore out and no longer protected the valve covers.

Re: R90 crash bar mounting
Sorry ME, those look like some of the bad ones. Flander's sold a set of wrap around crash bars that didn't catch like a simple round bar does. However, they were in the way of service, so had to be loosened and rotated out of the way.
I saw so many wrecked bikes that had cylinders knocked off and crash bars that made it happen. Worse, was rider injury.

Re: R90 crash bar mounting
The ones I bought have BMW part numbers and logo on them. They are the small two piece units. Haven't mounted and looked at them that close to see how much they are past the end of the cylinder yet. I was thinking of using them if I take a trip and want to mount running lights on them. I prefer the look and clearance without them installed. I like to use the bike to check my PO Box in Virginia City, nice twisty road, can't compromise clearance on it.
