I do not think it is a snap ring.
I was careful in my original post to say that it is a small tube/solid shaft set-up. That is, it predates the cush drive. There is no room in the small tube swingarm for a cush drive as I understand it.

I had some time this morning to check out this drive shaft. It has NO SNAP RING. Really, it looks like a simple wire type ring in the photo but by using a pointy probe, I can tell that what looks like that is not. It does not have any gaps at all. The picture shows up a shadow or a bit of difference in the light because of shadows or residual oil but the pointy tool shows that it is not any kind of split ring.
On the main end of the shaft, with a strong light, I can see that the shaft has splines, onto which the cup is pressed(?) I have the Cycle Works tool. I have removed a couple of the sprung type shafts successfully and I am sure it is not one of those. For clarity, I have both types of tools from Cycle Works. Dan from Cycle Works seems stumped by this as well. I sent him some photos.
This morning, I tried the tool that is made for the sprung shaft. That is, I tried to "compress" the shaft. It did not move at all.
Is there a model that is only able to be removed by heating the splined cup?

Hi Chuey, Im only aware of two style of shafts as youve mentioned. Would it be screwed on in place ? Sound stupid hey but how else does this sucker come off. Surely just a taper fit wouldnt be safe enough on its own to stay in place ? I have two spare swingarms in the shed , one has a complete drive shaft still fitted i'll have a look out of curiosity.

A properly designed and installed taper fit will take a lot of hp before it lets go.

Ok , back from the shed, the spare swingarm/driveshaft that i have to suit the solid drive shaft type has the large nut type.SO i have no idea what style /fit you have. If Dan does not know could it be a repair job ? if it is , look's like a neat job that has been done !

I do not know for sure but I think it is from the 78 R100 I bought with a Krauser engine in it.

If it is on a taper with a spline, it cannot go anywhere when it is installed because there is not enough room for any movement. If there is no clip and compression did not show any type of release then it has to be pressed apart. Is it strong enough to support cup/ housing while your push down on the shaft with a press?
What does the other end of the drive shaft look like, can it come apart from that end?

I was (barely, and with some tricks) able to fit on the tool that is supposed to press apart the nutted shafts. It did not budge.
