I don't know anything about the wheels on a 84 R100RS, so I am asking here. I have a request for shims for that bike. Seems to me that 84 is the year that they changed over to ball bearings.
Any comments by our knowledgeable members? TIA

Don't think so...the '84 was still the twin shock version so pretty sure it has the standard tapered roller bearing stack.
Snowbum indicates that from 1985, Airheads used a #6005 bearing. It appears that the R65LS, produced prior to 1985, also used the sealed ball bearings. Anton has a good cross references to bearings and part numbers here:

Re: 84 R100RS wheel question
MaxBMW fiche shows standard roller bearings with shims for those years. My 1984 R65 with cast wheels had them too.
Re: 84 R100RS wheel question
Tapered roller bearings for an 84. If the axle diametre is the same as earlier models, your shims will be helpful.
Might however be difficult to hold the shim in position prior to inserting the axle.

Re: 84 R100RS wheel question
My '84 with snowflake wheels has tapered bearings.

Oddly just on the front. Rear wheel on the LS is taper roller.Kurt in S.A. wrote:....It appears that the R65LS, produced prior to 1985, also used the sealed ball bearings...

Thinking some more re the shims and snowflakes, the shim can be held in place between the large spacer and wedding band by the plastic 'centering ring', if that's what they're called.

Thanks for the answers. Seems that it just got more complicated as time went on.
Ask the Indians what happens when you don't control immigration.
